I have only tested using McBoot 1.8, ULE 4.39, and kloader 2.0. There was a problem using kloader/PS2-Linux after accessing the mass: driver in ULE 4.39 in kloader1.9. This problem appears to be gone.

Both FAT PS2 run and run_hdd config.txt's have the two sound modules disabled.
There are two extra configuration files - config_sound.txt in both ps2linux\run and ps2linux\run_hdd directories
with the two ROM1 modules enabled. This only works on v3 and v7 PS2s. It does not work on v9 and v12.
4b) win3 - Notepad edits but remember that these files look like one long line because it is in Linux format. Just change NTSC to PAL or DTV as needed
in the one place in this file. Change TV_MARGIN_X=number and TV_MARGIN_Y=number to setup your margin size in X-Windows (in pixels). The default is 16 pixels,
but try to adjust these to maximize the size for your TV. With margins of zero, you get a 640x448 resolution on NTSC, and most web pages/programs are made for more,
so you will be using scroll bars no matter what you use here.
This is not part of the install, but to save you a reinstall just for this you can modify win3 and then use the File Manager in PS2-Linux to copy from /mnt/sda1/ps2linux/ to /usr/local/bin/.
Then instead of shutting down the PS2 select "Exit" from the bottom fluxbox menu. X-Windows will disappear and you will be dropped to a (where some of the letters are off of the screen).
Regardless of whether you can see the typing due to overscan, enter "exit" and you will see a logout/login/X-Windows restart. I use this process to test X-Windows changes without restarting Linux.
Note that every time this script is run, your /mnt/sda1 is mounted. This helps as it is mounted as read-write for your user - adent, and will be visible to the File Manager.
You can use this to copy files between your PS2-Linux and your PC if you want, but don't remove the USB drive while running PS2-Linux. You MUST shutdown to avoid corrupting the partitions on your USB drive.
4c) resolv - Notepad edits as noted above, but just put your DNS server IP address, usually your router IP.
4d) intface - I haven't tested dhcp setup yet, you can remove the # after "ASSIGNMENT", then remove everything after "dhcp" to attempt. I don't know if it will work.
4e) dillorc - Similar to modifying "win3" in step #4b, you can modify the lines for dillo display:
geometry=636x422 (make smaller as you increase the TV margins)
force_my_colors=YES (change to NO for colors you are used to) beware that on CRT TV sets, the may cause screen-tearing and may even damage your TV's power supply due to an abundance of white backgrounds in web pages. LCD TVs do not have this problem.

5) When running kloader2.0.elf from ULE on slim PSTwo, you get a "Error Message: Failed to load module "eromdrvloader.irx" and a long delay before you can "Press CROSS to continue.". I tried to dump the BIOS and access this file so I could load the module.irx with kloader, but could not solve this problem. Anyone want to help with this problem?
Just press enter, the enter again to select "Boot Current Config".
The error shows up a second time before the Linux messages started scrolling on the screen during installation. You do not have to press enter on the second error message; just wait for the message to disappear.
6) I offset the installation text 5 characters to account for potential overscan. The first prompt asks to enter "h" for hard drive on FAT PS2 installation, "u" for USB drive installation (on either FAT or Slim models), or another key to exit.
7) At the first prompt if you want to restore your already ps2-linux-partitioned device, enter "undo", otherwise enter the size your FAT partition will be reduced to (just enter the number, with no trailing "MB").
7a) If you enter "undo" you will see the process complete and you will be dropped to the shell prompt of the initrd, and you may remove the USB device. You can then reboot to reinstall if you wish.
At the second prompt you will be asked to enter a linux swap size (I usually enter 32) in MB or press <enter> to drop to a shell if you an expert and want to manually configure your partitions and install. This shell may also be used if your Linux partition becomes corrupted and the automatic fsck won't fix it. You can from this shell run "e2fsck /dev/sda3" and follow the prompts to have a good chance of restoring your Linux partition should it become too corrupt to auto-repair on booting.
9) A paragraph will display once complete, with the partition size list, and wait for <enter> to be pressed
to proceed with the lengthy installation. It took about 2 minutes to partition a 1GB device and much longer to extract the .bz2 files. The screensaver will activate during this time. I do not know how to disable so merely press the <cntrl> key or other non-entry key to make the screen re-appear. I've had it not re-appear until all is done, but the install worked just fine albeit at USB version 1 speed, which requires a bit of patience. I have a USB flash drive with a light that flashes when it is reading/writing. When the screensaver kicks in don't worry, in about 45 minutes after hitting the down-arrow once, it will re-appear after the files are written.
10) Per the on-screen instructions, reset the PS2 after "Installation complete." message. Use ULE to copy the mass0:\ps2linux\run\config.txt to mc0:\kloader. Launch kloader2.0.elf from ULE. Repeat Step #5 to use kloader to start PS2-Linux. If you have the Slim PSTwo, you must use the config.txt from the run_slim directory.
11) You will see plenty of messages scroll by and may cut-off on the left side of the screen (overscan). Once X-Windows starts, you can right-click on the blue screen to bring up the menu, left click once to start an application. This menu is still full of stuff that doesn't work and needs clean-up, further testing/fixes for some apps.
dillo browser works, the one bookmark is from before psx-scene rebuild, so that example doesn't work. If running dillo on USB, it is probably best just to run dillo by itself. If you are on a FAT PS2 listening to xmms internet radio, you can run the slideshow (now with sample pictures) and there is no lag or stutter on USB.
Conky seems to work on the FAT PS2 (v3) but not the Slim PSTwo v12. I can play with the conky.conf to see what is killing it.
File Manager works and will make windows users comfortable with accessing and editing files. /mnt/sda1 is available on startup of X-Windows. You can double-click images to view them with "feh -F". Note that running the "feh" command without "-F" on images which have larger horizontal resolution than screen-size (remember to subtract margins) displays improperly (with diagonal lines).
ssh keys not setup so sshd doesn't run. ps2-linux-distro-comments_v?.txt says how to do this.
Slideshow works only if you put 640x480 or similar images in the /home/adent/smallpics directory or subdirectories. You can use larger images, but with fotosizer program for windows, why? This program will display varying image-sizes correctly
xterm works and is used for command line work. You are logged in as regular user "adent" and have to enter "su" and the "changeme" password to get to root where you can make system changes.
xmms doesn't work UNLESS you turn on the modules in kloader, which is done in the FAT config_sound.txt files - ROM1:LIBSD and ROM1:SDRDRV, and then it only works on the FAT PS2 version 3 and 7 (likely v1-7). It works with the Run Time Environment (RTE) off of disc 1 of PS2 Linux from the official PS2 Linux kit. I have asked on the playstation2-linux forum if they will release the RTE binaries, but they haven't responded and have no real reason to do so other than sheer goodwill. This is sad, as internet radio (xmms) and youtube videos (mplayer) work great on PS2-Linux on hdd with RTE. I will continue testing on the FAT PS2 with the two ROM modules and non-RTE kloader2.0.elf.

pysol solitaire works (runs in python), but the soundserver is not included. Just click through the pop-up error. If non-RTE audio is fixed or RTE is released for free then I may fix this problem.
Ignore the rest of the menu, except the bottom item - "fluxbox menu", "Shutdown PS2". This is SUPER IMPORTANT to avoid corrupting the filesystem, although with the ext3 filesystem the likelihood of corruption is much reduced. It took me some time to test and get this even hacked to work so please use this EVERY time you shutdown PS2-Linux. Otherwise enjoy lengthy boots or even unrecoverable Linux filesystems.
